Avoncroft Museum
Willow Skein & Split Hazel Frame Basketry
Date: Sat 28th March
Location: Worcestershire

Price: £110 or £100 (for members)

Join us for a hands-on day exploring the beautiful art of Willow skeining and Hazel frame basketry. We’ll begin by splitting Willow rods with a knife then into a three-part cleave, then refine them into skeins using a mix of shave tools. Next, we’ll move on to Hazel - cleaving and dressing rods with a knife to form the basket’s frame. Once we’ve had a go at preparing all the main components, we’ll bring them together to weave a small frame basket using the skeined Willow. This workshop is rooted in critically endangered heritage craft techniques and inspired by natural materials - an invitation to slow down, work with your hands, and connect with these traditional methods. Tutor Details: Shannon Berry is a skilled green woodworker and basketmaker who teaches traditional crafts rooted in sustainable woodland practices. With a passion for heritage skills and inclusive learning, she guides students in creating beautiful and functional items from natural materials. Fee: £110 or £100 for members. Please note, the reduced members rate applies to members only. Please list your membership number in the notes section at the point of booking. Participant information: All tools and materials provided. No previous experience needed - just curiosity and a willingness to learn.
