Von Hand is an annual international craft gathering, with folks joining from around Europe and beyond, that’s rooted in traditional skills, community, and connection. Set in the forests of Brexbachtal, it’s a week of hands-on workshops, shared meals, and meaningful time together — a space to reconnect with self, place, and each other through the act of making by hand. Over two days, you will make a traditional split hazel basket from raw material to finished piece, learning each stage of the process by hand. Using knives and simple hand tools, you will split, dress, and prepare hazel to create all parts of the basket, developing confidence in safe tool use while gaining an understanding of how the material behaves and responds. Guided step by step, the course introduces the fundamental techniques of split wood basketry, a heritage woodland craft rooted in working closely with natural materials. You will leave with a completed basket and the skills and knowledge to continue exploring basketry beyond the festival. Suitable for beginners and those curious about traditional craft.
